HOUSTON –- The Houston Police Department responded to reports of a man who climbed about 50 feet to the top of a flagpole in front of LyondellBasell's downtown Houston offices.
An HPD spokesman said police were called to the 1200 block of McKinney Street around 10:35 a.m. Wednesday. The Houston Fire Department responded to the scene as well.
A person wearing dark clothing was said to be at the top of a pole.
According to a press release, the person in question is an activist denouncing LyondellBasell’s investment in tar sands. A group that calls itself the Tar Sands Blockade issued a statement around the same time of the incident saying it is working to fight the company’s plans to “nearly triple its tar sands processing capacity at its Houston refinancing facility in the Hispanic neighborhood of Manchster.”
Supporters of the plans say it would bring in more local jobs and increase energy independence.
By 11 a.m. the man was off the pole, and firefighters were working to take down a banner he mounted below the American flag.
