BAYTOWN, Texas – Authorities in Louisiana have arrested a 29-year-old Humble man wanted in connection with the stabbing of a woman at a Baytown motel on Saturday.
Christopher Kemp was wanted by Baytown police on a warrant for a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon stemming from an incident early Saturday.
Investigators said that Kemp had stabbed a 32-year-old woman just before 4 a.m. at the Econo Lodge in the 7400 block of Garth Road.
According to the Richland Parish Sheriff’s Department, Kemp was found driving erratically at 2:30 p.m. in a stolen 2007 blue Toyota Solora on I-20 in Monroe, La.
Deputies tried to stop Kemp, but he refused to yield to law enforcement officers and led them on pursuit to the Holly Ridge exit.
Kemp then drove into a farm field where he later surrendered to the officers at 3:05 p.m., deputies said.
The suspect is being held at the Richland Parish Detention Facility on charges of driving while intoxicated and felony evading as well as the aggravated assault from the Baytown incident.
The manhunt for Kemp started early Saturday after police responded to a call of a stabbing at the motel located on Garth Road. When police arrived at the scene, they saw a woman inside Room 220 covered in blood.
“I was coming home around 3 or 4, and I saw a lot of cop cars, a lot of commotion. We didn’t really check it out because it was really late,” said Madison Pepper, a witness.
The officers had to force their way into the room when the victim did not respond to open the door. Officers busted out the windows.
“Scared and nervous, I was right beside it and I didn’t hear anything,” Jasmine Jones, a guest at the motel, said.
Investigators said the victim had been stabbed eight times with a pocket knife. She was flown to Memorial Herman Hospital for her injuries and is listed in stable condition.
Before police arrived, Kemp had left the motel in the victim’s blue Toyota Solara and drove to a friend’s home in Mont Belvieu.
Police said that while at his friends’ home, Kemp told them that he had stabbed a woman in Baytown.
Police said Kemp and woman were in a casual dating relationship. Surveillance video showed a man and a woman that police believe to be Kemp and the victim walking up to a room, with bags and beer in hand.
“It goes to show you, you could never trust people, everyone has an ulterior motive. It makes me so nervous knowing I stay so close to a violent crime,” said Pepper.
