HOUSTON – Police said an early morning apartment fire was the handy work of an angry husband.

Investigators with the Houston Fire Department said the blaze was set around 2 a.m. Wednesday at The Commons on Edgebrook apartments on Arlington Square in far southeast Houston.

The Houston Police Department said officers were called to the location before the fire broke out after there were reports of a couple fighting. While officers were looking for the husband, they said he went into his wife’s apartment and intentionally set it on fire. The wife was in the apartment at the time along with another resident.

"The lady that lives upstairs with them said that he was putting papers, newspapers with fire, under the couches and everything so it'd catch on fire," said a neighbor. "I guess that's how it started."

The neighbor said both women had to escape the fire by jumping out of a window. No injuries were reported, but the wife's cat was later found dead.

Firefighters managed to put out the blaze but not before it destroyed the apartment. Two nearby units had smoke and water damage.

The husband was still at-large several hours later, according to HPD. Police said he has a history of violence. His identity was not released.
