HOUSTON — A birthday party turned tragic after a suspected drunk driver ran into a 4-year-old girl and then took off Saturday night.
Witness Cindy Flores said the girl was playing with a piñata on a driveway around 8 p.m. in the 2100 block of Floral Street in southeast Houston when the man in a black Nissan Altima ran a stop sign, swerved and then hit the child.
“He ran over the little girl, the girl held onto the hood and he floored it,” said Flores.
The child’s father jumped in his truck and followed the suspect. He was able to lead police to the driver, who was found in the 6800 block of the Gulf Freeway, and investigators took the suspect in custody. Witnesses believe he was intoxicated.
“It was ridiculous, I don’t know how you just run over somebody and you just floor it,” said Flores. “He’s going to jail and I hope he rots.”
Police said the child was responsive as she was taken to the hospital with a cut on her head and a broken leg. She is expected to survive.
Police identified the driver of the car as Agustin Gutierrez. He has been charged with failure to stop and render aid.
