CONROE, Texas – A Conroe High School student was shot and his girlfriend was assaulted when the girl’s jealous ex-boyfriend ambushed them Tuesday, authorities said.
The ex-boyfriend, 18-year-old Angel Hernandez Jr., was charged with aggravated assault and attempted murder.
Police said when Jose Cardenas, 19, arrived to the 300 block of Jewel Street to pick up his girlfriend and another young woman, Hernandez was waiting nearby. Cardenas was about to give the two young women a ride to school, but as they were approaching his vehicle, Hernandez ran up and began firing.
One of the bullets hit Cardenas in the torso before the gun malfunctioned, police said. Instead of stopping, Hernandez then opened the car door and pulled the victim from the car and began to pistol whip him.
Hernandez’s ex-girlfriend tried to intervene and pull him off Cardenas, which is when he turned his attack on her. Hernandez struck her with the pistol in the head and face area, police said.
Cardenas attempted to flee on foot, but Hernandez chased him down and continued assaulting him.
Somehow, the girlfriend managed to get the gun away from the suspect, but Hernandez continued to beat the new boyfriend until police arrived. After officers intervened, they realized the young man had been shot. Cardenas was taken by ambulance to Conroe Regional Hospital. Both victims attended Conroe High School.
Hernandez was arrested and transported to the Montgomery County Jail.
The assault took place as a Conroe ISD school bus was approaching the area to pick up students. No students on the bus or waiting for the bus were injured.
