HOUSTON – A pickup truck driver was taken into custody Thursday night after crashing into a Houston police officer in northeast Houston.

Police said an HPD unit was traveling northbound on Irvington near Craven around 10:30 p.m. when the officer saw two pickup trucks racing in the southbound lanes. The officer made a U-turn in the median and was attempting to go after the first truck, when the second truck slammed into the back of the squad car.

The impact caused the officer to smash into a light pole. Thankfully, he was not seriously injured.

The driver of the pickup truck in the crash was taken into custody.

A witness at the scene said that many residents and business workers along Irvington constantly complain about the street racing, which happens often.
