HOUSTON -– A pickup truck driver died early Thursday morning after hitting the back of a stopped 18-wheeler along Highway 290, authorities said.

The accident happened on the freeway’s westbound frontage road near Huffmeister around 3:15 a.m., according to Houston TranStar.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said the 18-wheeler was stopped outside a business waiting for it to open when it was struck by an older model Chevrolet pickup.

The pickup driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The big rig's driver was sleeping while waiting for employees to arrive. He was not hurt, deputies said.

The incident blocked the westbound frontage road for more than three hours.
