HOUSTON -- A 79-year-old man was hit and killed while trying to cross a busy street in southwest Houston.

Police said the accident happened in the 9200 block of Bellaire. The victim was walking home from the Jusgo Asian Supermarket when he was struck by a Toyota Camry.

Investigators said the driver was not at fault and may not have even seen the victim. He was crossing the road where there was no crosswalk.

"It was a very loud impact," said witness Glen Taylor, who was standing nearby.

The car hit the victim so hard, he cracked the front windshield. Bystanders tried to help him but he was pronounced dead on the scene.

"A lot of the problem is this construction," said Taylor. "Last week the street was a one way, now it's a two way."

Family members of the victim gathered near the scene but were too distraught to go on camera. One relative told us he recently celebrated the birth of his grandchild, now the family is dealing with his death.
