HOUSTON -- A neighborhood in northwest Houston was on watch Saturday after someone left an explosive package on a 62-year-old woman's doorstep.
“There was just this big bang,” neighbor Dennis McCoy said.
McCoy was watching television at home two doors down when the explosion happened around 6:30 Friday night.
Houston police said the women opened the package in the backyard of her home. She was taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. McCoy said the woman had the package for several days and seemed hesitant to open it.
“She just asked me if by any chance I had left some candy on her doorstep, and I said, gosh, was I supposed to because I didn't,” McCoy said.
Neighbors said the woman had lived in the house with her husband for several years, and they had never noticed anything suspicious around the home.
Houston police and the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms were working together on the case. On Saturday, HPD investigators were back on the scene to ask neighbors about what they heard.
Meanwhile, neighbors were keeping a close eye on each other and the community, which they described as quiet and peaceful.
