HOUSTON—The outbound lanes of the Southwest Freeway were shut down at Beltway 8 Thursday morning after a fatal crash.

Police said a man in a car smashed into the back of an 18-wheeler around 3 a.m., just as they passed under the Beltway.

The truck driver lost control, and the 18-wheeler rolled onto its side.

The trailer was detached from the rig, and when it came to a rest, it was blocking all of the southbound lanes – including the HOV.

The man in the car died at the scene, but the truck driver was not injured.

Investigators kept the lanes closed until just after 8:30 a.m.
