PASADENA, Texas – A man was shot by an off-duty Houston police officer Sunday night after witnesses said the man displayed a gun inside a restaurant.

It happened at the Peppers restaurant in the 3600 block of Fairmont Parkway in Pasadena around 9:45 p.m.

Witnesses said a man came inside and displayed a weapon, threatening some of the patrons.

One of the customers dining at the restaurant happened to be a retired Houston police officer. He attempted to calm down the suspect and persuade him to leave. The officer’s relative called another friend, who is also a Houston Police Department officer.

The officer showed up just before Pasadena police arrived and confronted the man. The suspect allegedly displayed his weapon, failing to respond to commands to drop it, and the officer opened fire.

The armed man was sent to the hospital by Life Flight. His condition was not released.

Pasadena detectives and HPD Internal Affairs are investigating the case.
