HOUSTON –- A Houston Police Department officer opened fire on a suspect in a south side home late Tuesday, police said.

The shooting happened as an HPD narcotics unit attempted to serve a warrant around 9 p.m.

Police said they entered the home on Sherwood Drive near Ward Street and saw the suspect make his way to the back of the property. Despite officers’ commands to surrender, police said the man ran into a back bedroom and appeared to reach for something.

An officer opened fire, shooting the suspect in the abdomen. He was sent to Ben Taub Hospital in serious condition.

Family members were home at the time of the incident, but no other injuries were reported.
