HOUSTON -- Dennis Lavaige knew something wasn’t right when he spotted a tractor-trailer hauling 45,000 pounds of brand new aluminum bars.

"I just don’t buy something like that from an individual," said the owner of the C&D Scrap Metal in the Heights.

Houston police said the metal, worth about $250,000, and the truck were stolen two weeks ago.

Officers were searching for it when they got wind of the delivery to the C&D lot.

"Red flags go up all over the place," said HPD Officer Chad Stivers.

Lavaige says the men who delivered the metal took off before police arrived -- and before they got paid.

Cameron International, the company that owns all of that aluminum, now has its property back.

Police are working to track down those not-so-smart crooks before they strike again.
