HARRIS COUNTY, Texas—The search is on for the person who abandoned a newborn baby Saturday in southeast Harris County.

It happened at the Park Center apartment complex near on Beamer Road and Olivewood Drive. Harris County Precinct 2 deputies said the baby was found alive at 10 a.m.

Child Protective Services said a resident heard the baby boy crying and found it wrapped in a T-shirt on the ground. The newborn still had his umbilical cord attached.

Investigators are interviewing residents at the complex to see if anyone saw who abandoned the child.

The newborn was rushed to Texas Children’s Hospital. Officials said, despite Saturday’s heat, the baby was doing well.

Under the state’s “Baby Moses” law, a person can leave a newborn at a safe place, like a fire station or a hospital, and not face prosecution. However, since the person who abandoned this baby did not do that, he or she will face charges if found.
