HOUSTON -- Some neighborhood residents fear the improvement plans for a Bellaire school actually threatens neighborhood safety.

The new designs for Condit Elementary in the Houston Independent School District call for new parking to replace much of the surrounding green space.

“There are a lot of children who play in the street right after school, on the weekends and there are a lot of residents that use the streets for exercise, jogging, biking and any increased traffic on these streets puts them at increased risk as well,” said Molly, a nearby resident.

Construction manager Daniel Bankhead said Houston ISD is listening to the neighbors’ concerns.

“We want to be a good neighbor through this process,” said Daniel Bankhead, with HISD Facilities Design.

For months they've held community meetings explaining how the plans protect children and neighbors, but some people say the notice came after blueprints.

“Their concerns will be considered and may be the little spark in the project that makes it a special project,” said Bankhead.
