HOUSTON – Neighbors of the 5-year-old boy who was allegedly starved by his father and stepmother say they had no idea what was going on behind closed doors.
The boy was severely undernourished with bones sticking out and bumps and bruises, according to deputies. Siblings say he was forced to live inside a stairway closet in their Spring home.
Bradley and Tammi Bleimeyer are charged with felony endangerment of a child.
Five other children, ages 16,14, 13, 7 and 5, are in CPS custody and a baby is in foster care.
Neighbors say the couple was unfriendly and they saw deputies at their house several times.
"I thought they were friends, silly me," said Christy Moskowitz. "They were there often. I’m thinking maybe that was one of their friends. I wasn’t thinking something bad."
Other neighbors who spoke with us didn’t want to be identified.
"I saw the second-grade daughter, she looks like she just got out of bed most of the time," a neighbor said. "And the two times I saw the boys, they were always in baggy clothes."
She said she gave the family clothes and toys to try and help out.
"The peculiar thing, they never said thank you. They never acted grateful," she said. "They act like, why was I standing on their porch?"
In an exclusive interview, Tammi Bleimeyer said she had no idea about her stepson’s condition, because she wasn’t living with her husband.
"We’ve been separated, for the most part, for the past several months and he comes back and leaves again so it’s very short visits," she claimed.
She said she never noticed his bones sticking out or other signs that he’d been mistreated.
The 33-year-old who is pregnant with her seventh child said she’s a good mother.
"I always do what’s in the best interest of my kids which is why I am here right now and why I am fighting so hard," Bleimeyer said. "My kids mean everything to me. I would never put them in jeopardy."
The 5-year-old remains in the hospital in stable condition. He will likely be there for weeks.
