HOUSTON – A community in northwest Houston is banding together this holiday to help several families whose apartment homes went up in flames.

Firefighters battled a 2-alarm fire in the 1700 block of Wirt Monday evening.

“Some of our stuff got wet,” said Favioly Ausencio.

Their Christmas tree sits in the courtyard of the apartment complex and all their remaining furniture.

Many of the residents lost everything in the fire.

“Some of their children came out without shoes or sweaters,” said Casey Hernandez.

Neighbors donated bags of food and clothing to help the fire victims who moved into vacant apartments.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation
