HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – A manhunt for a northwest Harris County man that led authorities all the way to his native Romania, ended with the suspect being brought in chains and cuffs to the Harris County Jail Friday.
Camil Matase arrived about 3 p.m. at the Inmate Processing Center on Commerce at San Jacinto.
Authorities had been looking for him since last Nov. 14, when Matase’s college freshman son came home to find his mother and older brother dead at a bloody crime scene in the family’s home on East Windhaven Terrace Trail in northwest Harris County.
There was no sign of Matase, who is an engineer originally from Romania. When he went before a judge Friday, he asked questions about getting an attorney.
If convicted, Matase will not get the death penalty.
“The extradition was worked out that we would not seek the death penalty,” said HCSO Deputy Thomas Gilliland.
He said the promise of no death penalty was part of the extradition deal between Romania and the U.S. that took months to work out.
Matase is due back in court on Monday. He faces two counts of capital murder and is being held without bond.
