HOUSTON –- The westbound lanes of the North Loop were shutdown early Thursday after a motorcycle rider went airborne and died, police said.
The accident happened near the exit for T.C. Jester around 1:30 a.m., according to the Houston Police Department.
Officers said the rider was traveling at a high rate of speed when he struck a concrete barrier, sending him airborne. The bike’s fuel tank came off and became lodged under a passing car, catching fire.
The car’s driver was not hurt, but the motorcycle rider was pronounced dead at the scene.
The freeway’s westbound lanes remained closed for about five hours.
