HOUSTON – The mother of a two-week-old baby boy who went back into a burning apartment building to rescue her dogs has died, the woman’s family said Friday.

The woman’s brother spoke with KHOU 11 News, identifying her as Carrie Jordan, 38. Jordan leaves behind a newborn, Nicholas, who barely made it out of the fire.

The flames broke out early Thursday morning at the South Point apartments on Roydon Drive at Featherwood Drive in Houston.

Neighbors rushed to help each other escape the blaze, kicking down gates and jumping off balconies. A teenage boy and his father were credited with helping Jordan, her infant, and her mom escape the fire.

But fire officials said Jordan went back into the apartments to get her dogs. Firefighters later found her barely clinging to life inside the smoke-filled structure. She was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

Jordan’s brother said his baby nephew is now under the care of the grandmother.

A cause for the fire was not yet released.
