HOUSTON—A woman has been charged after police say she hit her 16-year-old daughter with a machete, something she regularly did as a form of punishment.

Ana Cristina Canales, 48, is charged with aggravated assault of a family member.

Canales’ daughter told authorities that her mom returned home drunk on July 3, according to court documents.

The two got into an argument about Canales’ drinking, and Canales allegedly smacked her daughter across the forearm with a machete. While her mother was in the bathroom, the girl fled to call the police.

The daughter told investigators that her mother had struck her with the machete before, once slicing her thumb, and she was told to lie to doctors about where the injury came from.

In an interview with police, Canales allegedly admitted to hitting her daughter with the machete and accidentally cutting her thumb when the girl’s hand "got in the way" during her discipline.

Officers say Canales admitted to having a drinking problem.

"I’m glad I was stopped because who knows how far I would have gone," she said to authorities.
