PASADENA, Texas – Mickey Gilley surprised his Facebook followers when he posted a video announcement about his plans to resurrect his popular Gilley’s Club.
Gilley’s is best known for inspiring the John Travolta Film “Urban Cowboy,” which was filmed in Pasadena.
The popular club made country music cool and put Pasadena on the map. One Pasadena resident recalled going to Gilley’s almost every Friday night.
The original Gilley’s was destroyed in a fire more than 20 years ago.
"We are putting a plan together -- a business plan -- to rebuild Gilley's in Pasadena," Gilley said.
He said he needs to raise at least $3 million for his new Gilley’s concept, which includes a modern club with seating for 2,000 and a classic mechanical bull.
He has reached out to various investors.
"I would like to see Gilley’s back up and running before I pass because I am 77 years old,” Gilley said. “I don’t want to run a club, but I would like to see my namesake up in Pasadena because it was a big part of my life."
He currently has four other clubs up and running around the country and one about to open in Florida.
