HOUSTON—Houston residents with close ties to Mexico nervously reached out to loved ones back home following Tuesday’s devastating earthquake.
“It’s pretty horrible,” said Luis Hernandez. “All my family is over there.”
The 7.4 magnitude temblor, which was centered in southern Mexico, damaged houses and shook tall buildings in Mexico City. Some Mexican immigrants living in Houston desperately worked the phones hoping to reach family members.
“I’ve been calling every hour but can’t get through,” said Maria Angelina.
Angelina had good reason to worry. She actually lived through the deadly 1985 quake that shook the same region.
“Buildings exploded and a lot of my friends died,” she said.
Many people stayed glued to their televisions awaiting the latest reports on injuries and damage. Many of them also vowed to do whatever they could to help the victims.
“This is very bad,” said Hernandez.
