HOUSTON—Neighbors had a chance Wednesday night to learn more about plans for a new Walmart near the Heights.
There’s been a lot of opposition from the start about the plans and now a new study has raised questions about whether the Walmart should be built.
Walmart is planning to build the new store on a vacant lot at Yale and Koehler near I-10.
On Wednesday, Mayor Parker answered questions about the proposed Walmart at a public meeting held at the High School for Law Enforcement.
Residents in the Heights are concerned the store will bring too much traffic and will not fit in with the neighborhood.
Outside the meeting, a group called Responsible Urban Development for Houston released an economic impact study for the new Walmart.
"There is no market study that gives the city some basis for believing this store will increase economic activity and jobs in the city," said Civic Economics partner Dan Houston. "It’s unfortunate the private citizens had to dig into their own pockets to commission a study, to answer a question that the city should have asked some time ago."
Walmart has said the new development will bring hundreds of jobs to the area. As for traffic concerns, the city said it’s looking for ways to ease congestion.
