HOUSTON—People often head to Galveston to take a stroll, or go for a run along the seawall, but some people may be thinking twice about that after two women were attacked.

It happened Monday around 5 a.m. before tourists hit the beaches in Galveston. A woman was jogging in the 4700 block of Seawall Boulevard when she was targeted.

“A tall thin Hispanic male attacked her from behind and tackled her to the ground,” said Lt. Michael Gray with the Galveston Police Department. “She said that she was able to fight him off.”

Gray said the man wore a black, short-sleeved T-shirt.

“It was so early in the morning, there were apparently no witnesses out here. The man fled the area in a white Mitsubishi Gallant that had LED lights in the side view mirror,” he said.

But the man didn’t go far. In fact, he went just 10 blocks away, to the corner of 51st Street, and Avenue N and a half where police said he attacked another female jogger.

This woman was armed with a weapon.

“She carried a metal pipe with her when she ran and was able to hit the suspect, and he left, he fled on foot,” Gray said.

Lt. Michael Gray said it’s fortunate that the victims were able to defend themselves.

“The women did the right thing, they fought back,” he said.

Gray wants other people to be on alert and to take precautions when jogging alone.

Authorities are asking anyone with information to call Galveston police.
