HOUSTON – A man who was sleeping inside a storage shed was killed Friday morning when it went up in flames.

The fire was reported around 1:45 a.m. on East 2nd Street at Wichman Street.

Neighbors identified the victim as 61-year-old Otis Davis.

They could hear his cries for help and tried to save him, 28-year-old Stephen Onibayo told the Houston Chronicle.

Onibayo, who owns the property, said Davis had had been sleeping in the shed for months. Onibayo said he and his family built the small shack a few years ago because Davis was homeless and needed a place to sleep. There was no running water or electricity.

“Human life is precious,” Onibayo told the Chronicle. “It’s tragic. It’s sad.”

The exact cause of the fire is under investigation by HFD arson investigators as well as Houston police homicide detectives.

They believe it may have been caused by a cigarette.
