HARRIS COUNTY, Texas—A man was shot when he stepped between a group of armed robbers and his mother outside a north Harris County taqueria.

It happened Tuesday after 11 p.m. at Taqueria Nino on Kuykendahl Road south of Cypress Creek Parkway. Employees say it’s the 7th time the taco shop has been hit.

“This is the worst they’ve gotten,” said Itza Mejia. “They shot someone.”

Investigators with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said the man was picking up his mom, who was getting off her shift at the restaurant.

“(He) told them to stop and leave his mom alone, and they shot him,” said Mejia.

Four armed men approached the mother and demanded money, and that’s when the son stepped in. This led to an altercation, and the son was shot.

The gunmen fled the scene as the wounded son stumbled away and collapsed at a nearby gas station. His mother ran after him. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

“Pretty dramatic,” said Mejia. “As a mom it hurts a lot to know that your son was trying to defend you and was hurt defending your life.”

The man’s mother was not hurt. The victim was said to be in critical condition, but he is expected to survive.

Harris County Sheriff’s deputies do not have good suspect descriptions. They sped off in a dark gray SUV.
