HOUSTON – A vehicle crashed into an AT&T store early Friday morning after the driver was shot while fleeing the scene of a bar fight, investigators said.
Harris County deputies were called to the store at Louetta and Kuykendahl around 1:40 a.m. While they were en route, they got additional calls indicating the crash was related to a shooting at the Lord Loudon Pub in the 4600 block of Louetta.
When deputies got to the AT&T store, they found a silver Hyundai had crashed through the front window.
The driver, later identified as 24-year-old Ross Warax, was dead behind the wheel. Deputies said he'd suffered a single gunshot wound.
His girlfriend, who was in the passenger seat, suffered minor injuries in the crash and was taken to the hospital.
Shortly before deputies were called about the crash, a Precinct 4 deputy constable was checking an alarm near Sorrel Ridge and Louetta when he heard screeching tires and several gunshots, and spotted a suspicious car.
The deputy pulled the car over and searched it. The driver, Jamal Turner, was detained, and the deputy said he found an handgun in the vehicle.
Investigators said Turner admitted to being involved in a disturbance at the Lord Loudon Pub and said he’d shot at Warax’s vehicle.
Meanwhile, while deputies were at the AT&T store scene, a bar employee drove up. That man, Chad Kilpatrick, told deputies that he was involved in the bar fight, and said he’d also shot at the car as it was leaving the bar.
Deputies confiscated Kilpatrick’s gun, too.
Later Friday afternoon, the District Attorney’s Office accepted murder charges against Turner, 22, and Kilpatrick, 23.
Bond was set at $50,000 for both suspects.
The investigation was ongoing Friday evening. Anyone with additional information was asked to call Harris County Homicide at 713-967-5810.
