MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas –- A late-night swim among friends turned into tragedy early Tuesday.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office was called to Royal Forest Lake just east of Willis around 1:30 a.m.

Authorities said two young brothers and two teen girls were swimming when the drowning occurred.

A teen told deputies his brother went under the water and was not seen again.

North Montgomery County Fire Department responded with divers and a boat. After searching for over an hour, the 20-year-old victim’s body was recovered.

Detectives are investigating the incident, and an autopsy will determine if there were existing medical issues that contributed to the young man's death.

"If you have any medical issues or you are not a good swimmer, it's best to not swim at night in an area you've not swam in before," said Det. Paul Hahs.
