FORT BEND COUNTY, Texas -– A 22-year-old man died late Sunday after he drove his truck into a man-made pond in Fulsher, police said.
Both the Fulshear Police Department and the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Cinco Creek Ranch subdivision shortly after 9 p.m.
According to authorities, the young man was driving at a high rate of speed when he left South Fry Road at Cross Creek Bend Lane, plunging his truck into the pond.
Witnesses said they saw the man "splashing around" near the truck before both he and the vehicle went under water.
“There was a guy who went in to try and pull him out, but they weren’t able to get him,” said witness Matt Gilbride.
Fulshear police later identified the drowned man as Juan Ortiz-Rodriguez of Houston.
A Richmond Fire Department dive team located the victim's body and removed him from the pond, and his truck was removed a few hours later.
Investigators said the medical examiner's office would perform an autopsy and a toxicology test to help determine what caused the crash.
“The City of Fulshear would like to express it’s condolences to the victim’s family,” read a statement from the city spokesman. “The City of Fulshear also wants to commend those citizens and deputies who selflessly responded to the incident.”
