HOUSTON—A man is paying a high price to protect his family, and that price is being set by his HOA in northeast Harris County.

James Moody and his wife have lived in Stonefield Terrace for eight years.

Just a few weeks ago, after the birth of their son, he had burglar bars installed. But now, the homeowners association said the bars hurt property values and must come down immediately. And if they don’t, it will start fining the Moodys $200 a day.

"It’s very frustrating," Moody said, adding that he’s concerned about crime in the neighborhood. "What if they kick down my door? What if they take my wife and kid hostage?"

Several homes in the neighborhood already have bars on their doors.

Moody took pictures of them.

KHOU 11 News knocked on one door down the street and was told the previous owner had the bars installed last year, because he was robbed twice.

The Moodys said they wonder if you have to be a victim before you are allowed to have them.

Rafaelos Saucedo said she wants bars on her doors and doesn’t understand the HOA’s position.

"That’s not fair. That’s not fair because we pay for everything here," she said.

Moody said he’s starting a petition to change the HOA rules.
