HOUSTON -– Houston police said a man with drugs was taken into custody following a brief chase and a lengthy search on the north side of town early Friday.

According to an officer with the Houston Police Department, it was around 2 a.m. when a patrol unit tried to stop a Dodge Charger that was going nearly 100 mph on the North Freeway at Aldine Bender.

The officer said the driver refused to stop and exited the freeway, leading police on a chase to Rankin Road. The driver eventually ditched his car at an apartment complex near Kuykendahl and Dominion Park and then ran through some woods, police said.

A K-9 unit and the HPD helicopter were brought in to help find the man.

Police said about 30 minutes later, an officer spotted the suspect walking down the sidewalk on Rankin at Ella, and he was taken into custody.

Police said the man had marijuana and cocaine on him. He denied that he was the chase suspect, but police said the car involved in the chase was registered to him, and the officers involved in the pursuit recognized the man.
