LEAGUE CITY, Texas — A Deer Park man jailed on drug possession charges has died while in police custody in League City.

According to a press release the League City Police Department, autopsy results are pending for 33-year-old Richard David Benefiel.

League City police Officer Reagan Pena says Benefiel was arrested Monday morning after being found on a little-used road with the hood of his car up. Police say Benefiel appeared intoxicated and a search turned up marijuana in the vehicle. Benefiel was booked into the city jail.

Officers asked Benefiel several times if he wanted to be taken to a hospital — but he refused.

Jailers kept checking on Benefiel, who later complained of body aches and around 6 p.m. Monday requested help.

According to police, League City EMS arrived within four minutes of the initial call. The inmate became unresponsive and died at a hospital.

Investigators are reviewing the death.
