The heat is on in Houston, and sadly, thousands of homeless men, women and children find themselves battling the high temperatures without water, shelter or basic necessities.  To help, KHOU 11 is joining the Star of Hope, an organization dedicated to assisting the homeless, for its annual Summer of Hope campaign.

From August 1 to 10, KHOU 11 invites the public to donate toiletry items at the KHOU 11 Studio, located at 1945 Allen Parkway near downtown or at any Star of Hope shelter during normal business hours.

Though homelessness is not seasonal, the homeless population often increases during the summer months as temporary shelters become unlivable.  At the same time, donations to assistance organizations generally go down.

More than 1,100 people seek assistance from the Star of Hope each and every day for food, shelter and other needs.  For this population, the little things, such as basic toiletry items, mean a lot.

Most needed items include deodorant, shaving cream, travel size shampoo and soap, razors and toilet paper.

For those who cannot drop off items, but would like to help the Summer of Hope campaign, or for those who would like to learn more about the organization and volunteer opportunities, visit www.SOHMission.org.
