HOUSTON –- An off-duty METRO Police officer was involved in a serious crash south of downtown Houston early Monday.

Houston police said a driver ran a red light while traveling westbound on Gray Street at Hamilton. The driver collided with the officer, who was in uniform but in his private vehicle.

Neither man was seriously injured, but an ambulance took the officer to the hospital to get checked out.

The offending driver stayed at the scene. He said he was on the way to his job at the post office when he pulled into the intersection and was hit by the officer's car.

"I remember thinking I was going to be late for work and may have just not noticed the light," the driver told KHOU 11 News. "I wasn't cognizant of the lights and got hit."
