LAKE JACKSON, Texas — Lake Jackson EMS officials indefinitely suspended a lieutenant paramedic without pay Wednesday after he was charged with possessing child pornography — material an EMS official said was downloaded at the agency’s office.
Brazoria County Sheriff’s deputies raided the Pearland home of Craig Wunstel, 34, on Tuesday evening and arrested him on the third-degree felony charge.
Deputies discovered hundreds of images and videos on several computers Wunstel owned that depicted children displaying genitals, having sex with adults and performing sex acts, court documents state.
The children in the images and videos appear to range from 2 to 7 years old, court documents state.
If convicted of the charge, Wunstel could serve up to 10 years in prison. Sheriff’s deputies said they still are investigating, and Wunstel could be charged with additional counts of child porn possession.
Wunstel worked part time in Lake Jackson. He became a full-time paramedic with the Galveston County Health District a year ago.
The Galveston Health District placed Wunstel on paid administrative leave Wednesday after learning about the arrest.
"The District thinks the integrity of its employees is essential and feels the public should always feel confident they are dealing with personnel whose conduct is beyond reproach," Health District spokesman Kurt Koopman said in a news release.
Koopman said he did not have information Wednesday regarding Wunstel’s duties with the Galveston County Health District.
