HOUSTON – A six-hour SWAT standoff involving an elderly woman accused of holding her husband hostage ended peacefully Wednesday, La Marque Police said.

La Marque police were called to the house located in the 1700 block of Hawthorne after Harrom Nipp, 77, said his wife Loretta Faye Nipp, 73, was holding him hostage.  Police said it all began with a disagreement over finances.

Mr. Nipp called his wife’s brother to let him know she wasn’t letting him leave, and police said they were alerted just before 10 a.m.

Investigators said they learned there were several firearms inside the house and the wife had possibly made threats in the past to kill her husband.

La Marque police said they tried to make phone contact with the wife, but she disconnected the call.  A hostage negotiator was called in from Texas City, along with their SWAT team.

The husband was released from the house around 4 p.m., and shortly after his wife exited and was taken into police custody.

Mrs. Nipp was transported to a hospital for a mental evaluation.

La Marque police said the case will be briefed with the Galveston County District Attorney Office for possible criminal charges.
