HARRIS COUNTY - Two days after it was officially called off, the search for a missing kayaker resumed in a northwest Harris County lake.

Dive teams and a robotic submarine combed through Canyon Lake for signs of Ryan Smith, the 32-year-old father of five who vanished Friday night.

Smith was presumed to have gone fishing on the lake, located near West Road and Barker Cypress Road.

Neighbors spotted his kayak floating upside down Saturday morning. On Sunday, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office suspended the search pending any new information in the case. That information came Tuesday when volunteers from Texas EquuSearch using sonar detected a strange image in the water.

When a dive team from another agency showed up to help out, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office sent them away.

Officials said it was a jurisdictional matter and called the site a potential crime scene. They also said the case was still considered a missing person’s investigation.

A family friend insisted there was no way Smith would ever consider running off and leaving his family.

“No way,” Brian Singeltary said. “He loved his wife and his kids very much. He was a devoted father.”
