HOUSTON – An overturned tanker truck blocked multiple outbound lanes of the Katy Freeway at Heights Boulevard for several hours on Monday in west Houston.
The Houston Police Department has confirmed the truck’s driver died at the scene.
The crash was reported around 9:38 a.m. Monday in the 3300 block of the Katy Freeway, according to Houston TranStar. Four mainlanes, two frontage road lanes, and the shoulder remained blocked until about 2:30 p.m.
Investigators said the driver was hauling cooking grease and was just two miles from his destination when he lost control, skidded and rolled. The truck’s cab was crushed and came to a stop upside down in a grassy median.
No other vehicles were involved, according to TranStar. The truck involved is owned by a company called South Waste Disposal.
Westbound traffic on the Katy Freeway/I-10 is backed up through downtown. Eastbound traffic was extra slow as well due to rubbernecking.
