HOUSTON—Sources close to the investigation now say a girl who said she was abducted and raped in an abandoned house last week made the story up.

The 15-year-old Yates High School student told her mother last week that a man approached her in a pickup truck after she got off a Metro bus.

She had said the man forced her inside the vehicle and drove her to an abandoned house near the 3500 block of Noah Street in southeast Houston. That’s where he allegedly raped her.

Activists from the Nation of Islam scoured the neighborhood and handed out flyers seeking clues.

Officials with HPD now say detectives are no longer investigating a sexual assault.

Sources close to the case said detectives became suspicious of the girl’s story during the forensic portion of their investigation.

The Nation of Islam plans to hold a news conference in the neighborhood on Friday to discuss what happened.

The girl’s mother could not be reached for comment, but some people in the neighborhood expressed outrage over what appears to have been a lie.

“An innocent man could have gone to jail for no reason,” said Rinesha Maddox.

“Me and my brothers went walking for false pretenses,” said Mathis Greer, who spent two hours one night looking for the suspect’s vehicle.
