HOUSTON – A Houston housekeeper is accused of stealing more than $350,000 worth of jewelry from her clients, Harris County Precinct 4 Constables said.
Mary Jones Smith, 57, has been charged with aggregate felony theft.
According to investigators, Smith stole the jewelry from at least nine of her employers in the Champions area of north Harris County over the course of several years.
Four of those victims were fighting life-threatening diseases at the time of the thefts, and Smith was acting as a caregiver.
Investigators worked with a number of local pawn shops and gold buyers to recover some of the stolen jewelry.
They said Smith admitted to taking the items and named several other suspects that, at the time, were unknown to investigators.
She was being held Wednesday in the Harris County Jail on $500,000 bond.
