Fiery crash snarls morning commute on I-10 East

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas -- All westbound and eastbound mainlanes of I-10 East were shut down near Channelview following a fiery crash early Thursday.

At the peak of rush hour, A backup of about five miles was reported in both directions.

An 18-wheeler traveling westbound lost control and slammed into the concrete median near Magnolia Avenue. The truck then burst into flames, but the driver managed to escape unharmed.

No other vehicles were involved in the wreck, which was reported just before 4 a.m.

Nearly five hours later, the freeway's inbound/westbound lanes had fully reopened.

As of 9 a.m. two eastbound lanes remained blocked, however. The concrete divider was smashed and will require repairs. A hazmat team was called to the scene to assist in the cleanup.
