HOUSTON -– A man was killed in a crash on the south side of downtown Houston early Wednesday.

The incident happened around 1 a.m. on Pierce Street at Milam Street, according to the Houston Police Department.

Officers said a woman was driving a Mercedes sedan with a man in the back seat when a pickup truck hit them at an intersection. The man died at the scene, while the woman was sent to the hospital.

HPD said the pickup’s driver and two of his passengers were also sent to the hospital. Police said a blood draw would be performed on the truck driver, who they suspect was driving drunk.

Police believe the truck’s driver ran a red light, causing the crash.

The crash was just one of several across the Houston area on New Year's. From midnight to 6 a.m. about a dozen major crashes were reported inside the city limits alone.
