SPRING, Texas -- Funeral services were held Wednesday for the Stay family of Spring. A mother, father and their four children all buried one week to the day after they were gunned down execution style in their home.

The lone survivor, 15-year-old Cassidy, entered the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with a smile, flashing a hand sign for love and peace.

Inside, relatives shared stories of the family. Father Stephen Stay spoke Thai and Laotian. Mother Katie was just like Mary Poppins, practically perfect in nearly everywhere. The crowd of several hundred alternately laughed and wept.

Afterwards, Cassidy was clearly overcome, struck again by the enormity of what had happened. She battled to “Stay Strong”. A home next to the church made a sign with that message, its trees decorated with multi colored ribbons.

Six caskets carrying Cassidy’s parents, two sisters and two brothers were loaded onto hearses. Every member of Bryan’s Boy Scout troop attended. Some were even pall bearers.

They took turns helping Bryan who suffered from cerebral palsy.

“I found this love for the family and especially for Bryan through helping him with his disability,” said 18-year-old Ty Mixon.

Paramedics and deputies who responded to original call paid their respects Wednesday, including Precinct 4 Constable Ron Hickman.

“Twenty five of my department family volunteered to be here today to support this family and the community -- it’s so heartwarming," said Hickman. "I’ve never been so proud of my agency.”

Gone are Stephen and Katie Stay, their children, Bryan and Emily, both with special needs, and Rebecca and Zach. They were ages 4 – 14.

The work is far from over.

“Our folks will work with them through the victims’ assistance side, and try to support their needs from this point on," said Hickman.

Ron Haskell, 33, has been charged with capital murder. Authorities said he killed the Stay family because he was angry over his divorce with Katie’s sister.
