HUMBLE, Texas—An officer in Humble shot a burglary suspect who was caught breaking into an Ashley Furniture store, police said early Monday.

Another suspect managed to evade police for several hours, and the resulting investigation slowed southbound traffic on the Eastex Freeway near Deerbrook Mall.

The Humble Police Department said it all started when officers were called to the furniture store along the Eastex Freeway near FM-1960 around 4:30 a.m.

The suspects were spotted fleeing the store, and an officer shot one of them in the shoulder after a struggle.

“The officer attempted to use pepper spray, that’s when the suspect rolled him over, that’s when the suspect got on top of the police officer and began assaulting the officer,” said Sgt. Ken Theis with the Humble Police Department.

The injured suspect was taken into custody and then sent to the hospital.

A second suspect, however, apparently managed to escape by running across the freeway to the mall. He was located several hours later and taken into custody.

He was identified as Donald Harris, 26, and investigators said he has an extensive criminal history.

The investigation closed several southbound frontage road lanes and slowed traffic on the mainlanes at times. Harris County Sheriff’s Deputies assisted in the search.
