HOUSTON—Members of Houston’s Sikh community gathered outside Houston City Hall Thursday night for a vigil remembering the victims of the Wisconsin temple shooting.

Mayor Annise Parker told the crowd that all Houstonians grieve for the victims, regardless of their faith, or country of origin.

Individuals in the crowd said Houston has been welcoming, though some felt they’re misunderstood.

“What I want people to know about our religion is that the main message for us is love and that you know what happened was a tragedy and we’re not going to hold it against anyone, and that we’re going to move on and we want to show the community around us -- the Americans, whoever—we want to show everyone that we just love them,” said Jaspreet Singh, a University of Houston student.

Houston is home to between 7,000 and 10,000 Sikhs, according to the national Sikh center.
