HOUSTON -- Across the Houston area Thursday a wintry mix covered cars, trucks and many rooftops. It came and went quickly, and caught more than a few people off guard.

The young Hernandez sisters acted fast. Before leaving for school they scrambled to build a snowman, complete with the stem of a jalapeno pepper for a nose.

Alexandra Hernandez said she might name him “Snowy” before she put him back in her family's refrigerator.

Her mother was having fun too.

“She asked me ‘mommy, are you sure the school is open today?’” Maria Hernandez said. "I said 'yeah it is!'"

At the Shipley’s Donut Shop up the street, a line of cars wrapped around the building. Many customers did not want to be in the cold and opted for the drive thru instead.

Antoinette Rodriguez said she did not mind the weather.

“We were surprised, my little boy got up and he didn’t believe it,” she said. “He took a picture of himself so it was good.”

Others said spring could not come quickly enough.

“I hate the cold,” Ignacio Andrade said. “I want it to be hot already.”

Chances are he may have his wish soon.
