HOUSTON—Esau Granados-Villanueva can recall the deadly drive.
He said he was behind the wheel of his Toyota truck and that his wife Maria was in the passenger seat. Their 13-year old daughter was in back.
He said they were on their way to Friday night church services when they noticed two young women trying to cross Airline Drive near West Hambrick Road.
In the next moment, a pickup barreled their way, went into his lane and struck them head on. The impact killed a pedestrian, as well as his wife.
After the impact, he said he tried to lift her hand to see if she would respond. Then, he started to pray.
"She was a great wife," he said while holding back tears. "I loved her so much."
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office has yet to confirm whether charges will be filed against the driver of the pickup.
Relatives say that stretch of Airline Drive can be trouble.
"A lot of people from that flea market are seen drinking over there and putting other people’s lives at risk," said Granados’ sister-in-law, Evelyn Rivera.
Despite their pain, they are now urging others to not drink and drive.
Sheriff’s deputies identified the other victim as 33-year old Shelly Smith of Houston.
