HOUSTON – A 54-year-old Houston woman accused of beating her elderly stepmother with a lead pipe last month is now charged with solicitation of capital murder.
According to court documents, Charlene Rogers tried to hire someone to kill her stepmother on October 18.
She was arrested that same day.
Rogers was already facing charges of injury to an elderly person in connection with an incident at her home on September 14.
Police said Rogers and her stepmother had gotten into an argument that day, and Rogers told her stepmother to leave.
But as the elderly woman walked out of the home, she said Rogers hit her in the back.
The step-mother said she tried to push Rogers away with her cane, and then Rogers said "I’ve got something for you" and went back into her bedroom.
The stepmother said she was walking to her car when Rogers came out of the home with a lead pipe and started striking her with it.
Police said Rogers hit the elderly woman in the arm, stomach and leg.
When investigators interviewed Rogers, court documents say she admitted to hitting her stepmother with the pipe, but said she did it in self-defense because she thought her stepmother was going to get a gun.
Rogers was being held in the Harris County Jail Wednesday without bond on the solicitation of capital murder charge.
