HOUSTON—A woman was pulled to safety after crashing her car into Hunting Bayou Thursday morning.
It happened around 2 a.m. on the I-10 East feeder near Federal.
A witness told police he was driving behind the woman when she left the feeder at a curve in the road and careened into the bayou.
The witness said the woman scrambled out of the sinking car and clung to a concrete pillar, begging for him to save her.
Fearing for his own safety, the witness stayed on dry land, but he waited with the woman until HPD arrived.
After the rescue, police said the woman kept changing her story about whether or not she was alone in the car.
Dive teams searched the murky water for hours, but they didn't find a body. Officials said they may continue searching by air or wait until the water recedes.
An HFD crew eventually located the submerged car and removed it from the bayou.
There was no one else inside, police said.
Investigators were working to determine if alcohol was involved in the incident.
The identity of the woman was not released.
